Explore Iya Valley: Japan’s Secret Nature Paradise in Tokushima

Hidden Paradise in Tokushima: Explore the Stunning Iya Valley 💧🌿

If you’re looking for an off-the-beaten-path destination filled with nature, hot springs, and photo-worthy spots, Iya Valley (祖谷渓 / Iya-kei) in Tokushima should be on your list.

Known as one of Japan’s top 3 hidden valleys, this scenic area offers deep gorges, crystal-clear rivers, traditional food, and even a quirky statue perched on the edge of a cliff.

Let me share my personal favorites from a recent trip to Iya Valley — perfect for nature lovers, photographers, and adventure seekers.

🍃 What is Iya Valley?

Located in the mountains of Tokushima Prefecture, Iya Valley is a breathtakingly remote place surrounded by untouched wilderness.
The roads are narrow and winding, and in winter, snow can make it tricky to access — but on a clear day, the view is unforgettable.

♨️ 1. Iya Onsen — One of Japan’s Top 3 Hidden Hot Springs

Want to bathe in a secluded open-air hot spring deep in a valley? Iya Onsen is your spot.
What makes it special? You’ll take a cable car down to the riverside bath!

Highlights:

  • Natural hot spring (onsen) with a lukewarm 38°C temperature

  • No amenities — it’s all about soaking and relaxing

  • Stunning view of the valley from the open-air bath

  • Best visited in spring or autumn (it’s chilly in winter!)

📍 Address: 367-28 Matsuo Matsumoto, Ikeda-cho, Miyoshi-shi, Tokushima
📞 Phone: 0883-75-2311
🕒 Hours: 7:30 AM – 6:00 PM (Last entry: 5:00 PM)
💴 Fee: ¥1,700 for adults / ¥900 for children
🚗 Parking: Available

👦 2. Peeing Boy Statue — Instagram-Worthy and a Little Crazy

Yes, you read that right! There’s a little “Peeing Boy Statue” standing boldly on the edge of a steep cliff. It’s quirky, unexpected, and offers a dramatic photo opportunity with the valley in the background.

Tips for the Best Photo:

  • Step back to include the full cliffside view

  • Go for a low angle if you want to emphasize the height

  • No designated parking nearby, so short-term roadside parking might be necessary

Bonus: It’s just a short walk from Iya Onsen — you can park there if you’re visiting both spots.

🍜 3. Iya Soba — A Taste of the Mountains

Wrap up your adventure with a bowl of local handmade soba noodles.
I visited Momiji-tei, a highly rated soba restaurant with riverside views and a traditional vibe.

What Makes Iya Soba Special?

  • 100% buckwheat noodles — no wheat, just pure soba!

  • Slightly crumbly texture, rich aroma

  • I had the set with grated yam (tororo) rice — highly recommended

  • The view from the window? Absolutely soothing.

✨ Final Thoughts

Iya Valley isn’t easy to get to — but that’s exactly why it’s so magical.
You’ll be rewarded with silence, fresh air, and moments of peace that are hard to find in modern city life.

From an adventurous soak in a hidden onsen to a cliffside statue and local soba with a view, Iya Valley is a gem worth discovering.
