🌊 Discover Oki Islands: Japan’s Hidden Island Escape Full of Nature, Waterfalls, Coastal Views & Local Eats
Have you ever heard of the Oki Islands (隠岐の島)? Floating quietly in the Sea of Japan and part of Shimane Prefecture, this remote archipelago is a treasure trove of unspoiled nature, sacred forests, dramatic coastlines, and that rare, peaceful island atmosphere that makes time slow down.
I had the chance to visit Oki for work, and I couldn’t resist turning it into a mini adventure. Renting a car, I set out to explore what this hidden gem had to offer—and it turned out to be one of the most refreshing trips I’ve had in a long time.
✈️ Getting There: A Scenic Journey to the Edge of Japan
Oki may be remote, but that’s what makes the journey special.
There are no direct flights from Tokyo’s Haneda Airport, so I flew into Izumo Airport, then transferred to a small propeller plane bound for Oki.
It’s not every day you ride a propeller aircraft, and I found the experience delightfully nostalgic. The ride is bumpier than a jet, but somehow it made the flight feel more… real.
Upon landing, a statue of Oki’s famous Wagyu cattle greeted me at the airport. A warm, whimsical welcome that set the tone for the rest of my trip.
🌿 Must-See Nature Spots on Oki Island
1. Dangyō-no-Taki Waterfall – A Sacred Cascade in the Forest
A breathtaking 40-meter waterfall, ranked among Japan’s Top 100 waterfalls, with its spring also in the Top 100 Famous Waters list. A small Shinto shrine at its base adds a spiritual essence.
💡 Photo tip: On sunny days, walk behind the waterfall to photograph shimmering water with the sky as a backdrop—truly Instagram-worthy!
2. Chichi-sugi (Milk Cedar) – The 800-Year-Old Island Guardian
Deep in the forest stands this majestic cedar, revered as sacred and celebrated with a festival each April. The mossy forest path and torii gate create an atmosphere straight out of Studio Ghibli.
📍 About 30–40 minutes from Oki Airport.
3. Nagu Cape & White Lighthouse – Panoramic Ocean Views (and Cows!)
Perched above the Sea of Japan, the white lighthouse at Nagu Cape offers breathtaking views and a refreshing breeze.
🐄 Don’t be surprised to find free-roaming cows grazing along the path—no fences, no fuss.
🌅 Stay to watch the sunset, but head back before dark—the trail isn’t lit after dusk.
